To promote healthy living and to highlight the wide range of services and offerings here at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, we will offer education at various times during the month. Stop by the Front Desk between 9-11 a.m. for the following events:

Baby Café: Every Wednesday, 10 a.m.-noon
We invite breastfeeding moms to join us for our lactation support group meeting at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.  Moms will have the opportunity to meet with a lactation consultant, as well as network with other breastfeeding moms.  The group is designed to give breastfeeding moms encouragement and support, as well as helpful information and tips from our expert.  This event is free, but please call Rosie at 930-2807 to reserve your space.

Lupus Support Group:  May 5, 10 a.m.-noon
This group supporting lupus patients and their families will meet the first Saturday of every month at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. This event is free and is sponsored by the LUPUS Foundation of America-MID-SOUTH Chapter. Call 1-877-865-8787 for more information.

Blood Pressure/Body Mass Index Screening: May 8, 8-11:30 a.m.
A representative from Wellness Services will be screening for blood pressure and BMI in the front entrance at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. This is a free service.

Comprehensive Diabetes Education: May 15, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
If you have diabetes or are at risk, this seminar at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen is a must. A physician’s referral is required. Pre-assessments given preceding the class time.  Please call 939-7248 to register.

Wellness Screenings: May 15, 3-4:30 p.m. AND May 18, 7:30-11 a.m.
To stay abreast of your numbers, cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, BMI and waist circumference screenings will be held by appointment at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Results and interpretation in fifteen minutes with a simple finger stick. The cost is $20 for members and non-members. Cuisine at One Nineteen: May 17, 6-7:30 p.m.
Executive Chef of Seasons 52, Oliver Robinson, will be our guest chef.  Seasons 52 is a fresh grill offering seasonally inspired dining choices designed to excite and surprise the palate.  Come and enjoy Crispy Prosciutto and Asparagus Salad, and Wild Alaskan Halibut with Tomato Relish, Almond Slivers, Mashed Potatoes, and Green Beans.  Assorted mini indulgences will also be offered.  Bring a bottle of wine and a friend and enjoy this evening in a relaxing atmosphere at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.  The cost is $25 per person.  Please call 408-6600 for reservations.  Childcare available with advanced specified reservations.

Mediterranean Cooking Class: May 18, 11 a.m.-noon
Celebrate Mediterranean Diet Month at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen by learning about the health benefits of this traditional eating style and four new dinner recipes. Join Registered Dietitian and Chef, Jessica Ivey, as she shows you how to create simple meals featuring the common ingredients and flavors of the Mediterranean. Tentative menu includes Zucchini Chicken with Sautéed White Beans and Tomatoes, Walnut-Crusted Tuna Cakes, Eggs Poached in Tomato Sauce, and Mediterranean Lentil Salad. The cost is $12 per person. Breakfast with the Doc: Caring for the Skin You’re In: May 22, 8-9 a.m.
Join Dr. Sandra Zahradka, MD, with Greystone Dermatology as she discusses the largest organ in your body – your skin! Topics will include how to identify cancerous and precancerous spots and how to protect your skin as we move into the summer months when sun exposure is the greatest. Bring your questions and enjoy a light breakfast. This event at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen is free, but please call 408-6600 to register.

Culinary Boot Camp: A Cooking Academy for Teens: June 4-8, 8 a.m-12:30 p.m.
Are you a teen who loves watching cooking shows and trying new recipes? If so, Culinary Boot Camp at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen is the perfect fit for you! Come learn basic knife skills and cooking techniques, including sautéing, roasting, grilling and braising. You’ll have the opportunity to train under an experienced chef –all while making new friends and enjoying delicious foods. The cost is $225 per teen, includes an apron. June 11-15 (Ages *7-9) Savor the South – Take a tour around Southern USA, exploring similarities and differences of the cuisine of Sweet Home Alabama and our neighboring states.
June 18-22 (Ages 10-12) Savor the South – Take a tour around Southern USA, exploring similarities and differences of the cuisine of Sweet Home Alabama and our neighboring states.
July 9-13 (Ages *7-9) Epicurious – Curious kids want to know how food “works”.  Join the fun as we explore various cooking techniques and flavors.
July 23-27 (Ages 10-12) Epicurious – Curious kids want to know how food “works”.  Join the fun as we explore various cooking techniques and flavors.

*6 year olds, first grade completed, or at discretion of camp director
8:00 a.m.-Noon or 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Your child will prepare and enjoy four made from scratch recipes daily.  Some past favorites include Alabama “fried” green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, homemade chips and salsa, grilled corn on the cob and Bananas Foster.  Each child will learn where food comes from and how to prepare it in a healthy way.  Cooking utilizes science and mathematical skills, sharpens reading comprehension, listening, and following direction skills.  Social skills will also be strengthened in a fun, safe environment. 
Half day program with Camp One Nineteen in the afternoon available for $19/day.
